What it was
The default SRP sort order on mobile.de ranked listings by recency. Our hypothesis was that buyers who see the most relevant listings first — scored by match quality against their saved search criteria — would be more likely to contact a dealer without needing to refine. We tested a relevance-first ranking model built by the Search ML team against the existing recency default across all authenticated SRP sessions in Germany.
What we learned
Learning
Relevance-first ranking increased dealer contact rate by +4.2% (95% CI: +1.8% to +6.6%, reliability 0.97). Search refinement rate dropped by 0.8% — users needed to refine less because the first page already matched their intent. Bounce rate was flat. Rolled out to 100% of authenticated SRP sessions on 2025-11-25. The ML model is now the production default.
